Pr Said Mekari‘s research project on the effects of physical activity on the brain in the elderly population continues. This study offers a 10-week community-based physical activity and cognitive exercise program to French-speaking minority participants living in rural areas. The IMPACTS Lab study team, consisting of Isadora Quirion, Pierre FAIVRE and Shirko Ahmadi, continues to collect and analyze data. IMPACTS Lab would like to thank the Village of Memramcook, the Abbey-Landry School for their support, and of course all the study participants. Welcome to Victoria Dorimain, 2023-2024 Fellow of the Institut universitaire de première ligne en santé et services sociaux

Victoria Dorimain is a doctoral research student in health sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke. Her project aims to evaluate the impact of the school context and environment on physical activity and mental health among high school students. Victoria is interested in practice-based research where individuals and communities are stakeholders in approaches and actions aimed at equity, diversity and inclusion in relation to the determinants of health. She also values scientific vulgarization, the development of research skills in primary care and the mobilisation of clinicians with the aim of promoting practice-based research. Victoria holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Sciences and a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. She was recently awarded a doctoral scholarship for 2023-2024 from the Institut universitaire de première ligne en santé et services sociaux (IUPLSSS).

She is pursuing her doctoral studies under the co-direction of two professors from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – Université de Sherbrooke: Pr Mathieu Belanger of the Laboratoire d’Investigations sur les Mécanismes et Prédicteurs de liens entre Activités physiques, autres Comportements et Trajectoires de Santé (IMPACTS) and Pre Martine Shareck, Canada Research Chair in Urban Health Equity and Youth and Director of the Équité en santé urbaine laboratory. Pre Anne-Marie Turcotte-Tremblay, also co-director, is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Nursing at Université de Laval and a researcher at VITAM – Centre de recherche en santé durable. A new doctoral student in health sciences research joins the IMPACTS Lab team: Jennifer Hakim

Welcome to Jennifer Hakim, doctoral candidate in Université de Sherbrooke Health Sciences Research program at the Centre de formation médicale du N.-B. Jennifer holds a Master’s degree in Health Services Management from the Université de Moncton, as well as a Doctorate in Medicine from her native Lebanon. Over the years, and as a result of her personal experience, she has developed a particular interest in the barriers faced by foreign-graduated physicians in their professional integration into New Brunswick. Her research project, under the co-direction of professors Mathieu Belanger and Said Mekari, aims to understand the barriers and facilitators to the professional integration of foreign-trained physicians upon their arrival in the province.

Jennifer enjoys spending her free time with her family and her two boys, and is constantly on the lookout for new things to discover. She is passionate about reading, learning languages and exploring cultures through travel.

A thirtieth scientific publication from the MATCH longitudinal study.

A thirtieth scientific publication from the MATCH longitudinal study.

IMPACTS Lab would like to highlight this thirtieth scientific publication based on the analysis of data from the MATCH longitudinal study. This study illustrates the probability of participating in 36 different types of physical activity from childhood to late adolescence. The analysis reveals, among other things, that individual and unorganized activities are maintained longer than group and organized activities. Consult the article published by François Gallant, Jeff Hebert, Véronique Thibault, Said Mekari, Catherine Sabiston and Mathieu Belanger in Scientifics Reports: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-40882-3

Faut que ça bouge !

Faut que ça bouge !

Congratulations to Pierre Lavoie and Jean-François Harvey on the publication of “Faut que ça bouge!”, which addresses the need to implement an approach and practices that promote physical activity among young people aged 1 to 18. Lab IMPACTS is proud to note that many of the book’s findings are supported by results from its longitudinal MATCH study, lead by Prof. Mathieu Bélanger, principal investigator. The book is available Éditions de l’Homme website.
