A new recruit has joined the team: Emmanuel Zangio as Research Assistant

We are delighted to welcome Emmanuel Zangio, Research Assistant for the IMPACTS Lab. Emmanuel is originally from New Brunswick, but his family roots are in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the Université de Moncton and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Queen’s University. Emmanuel is particularly interested in cardiovascular sciences and race-related physiological inequalities and differences in health. For him, physical activity is a passion that he puts into practice. He had the chance to train with the Aigles Bleus men’s track and field team and was named MVP for the 2019-2020 sports season.  Welcome to the IMPACTS Lab team, Emmanuel!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be featuring some of the students and researchers who collaborated on the MATCH study and who are now pursuing independent, dynamic careers in their chosen fields. Jennifer O”Loughlin was a Canada Research Chair in Early Determinants of Adult Chronic Disease (2004 to 2021) and is a co-investigator of the MATCH study – Measuring youth activities to better understand their habits.

  • Award to Pamela Tanguay for her poster presentation in the Health Systems Services Research category, entitled “Healthcare professionals’ acceptability of a new cardiac rehabilitation model”.
  • Presentation by Shirko Ahmadi entitled “Physical fitness and its association to executive functions in older women” during the Population Health plenary session
  • Receipt of the Cardiovascular Research Endowment Grant to Saïd Mekari, Mathieu Bélanger and Pamela Tanguay for the study “Linking the Heart with the Brain Through Physical Activity”. This grant was made possible by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick in collaboration with ResearchNB . Pre Nicole Marquis of the Université de Sherbrooke’s École de réadaptation, Monique Dufour Doiron of Réseau de santé Vitalité and Pierre Faivre, doctoral students in the Université de Sherbrooke’s health sciences research program, are also collaborating on this study.

Pr Said Mekari’s research project on the effects of physical activity on the brain in the elderly population is well underway

Pr Said Mekari‘s research project on the effects of physical activity on the brain in the elderly population continues. This study offers a 10-week community-based physical activity and cognitive exercise program to French-speaking minority participants living in rural areas. The IMPACTS Lab study team, consisting of Isadora Quirion, Pierre FAIVRE and Shirko Ahmadi, continues to collect and analyze data. IMPACTS Lab would like to thank the Village of Memramcook, the Abbey-Landry School for their support, and of course all the study participants. Welcome to Victoria Dorimain, 2023-2024 Fellow of the Institut universitaire de première ligne en santé et services sociaux

Victoria Dorimain is a doctoral research student in health sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke. Her project aims to evaluate the impact of the school context and environment on physical activity and mental health among high school students. Victoria is interested in practice-based research where individuals and communities are stakeholders in approaches and actions aimed at equity, diversity and inclusion in relation to the determinants of health. She also values scientific vulgarization, the development of research skills in primary care and the mobilisation of clinicians with the aim of promoting practice-based research. Victoria holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Sciences and a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. She was recently awarded a doctoral scholarship for 2023-2024 from the Institut universitaire de première ligne en santé et services sociaux (IUPLSSS).

She is pursuing her doctoral studies under the co-direction of two professors from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – Université de Sherbrooke: Pr Mathieu Belanger of the Laboratoire d’Investigations sur les Mécanismes et Prédicteurs de liens entre Activités physiques, autres Comportements et Trajectoires de Santé (IMPACTS) and Pre Martine Shareck, Canada Research Chair in Urban Health Equity and Youth and Director of the Équité en santé urbaine laboratory. Pre Anne-Marie Turcotte-Tremblay, also co-director, is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Nursing at Université de Laval and a researcher at VITAM – Centre de recherche en santé durable.
